Tri State Truck Center Unveils Sponsored Classroom at Universal Technical Institute
Exposing Massachusetts' Workforce to the Many Opportunities in the Trucking Industry
The Problem
Most people do not realize how crucial trucks are to the function of most industries in our country. Without trucks, 80% of the goods that we rely on daily would not be able to get to where they need to be. What then happens if trucks can no longer move those goods? A crisis, and that is exactly what will happen if the trucking industry cannot keep up with the demand for diesel technicians.
Today, there is a huge emphasis on college being the only path that leads to a successful, and lucrative career. While this trend has steered many students towards a successful career path, it has also sent others down a path cluttered by unavoidable debt. The “college is for everyone” mantra has changed the way that parents and students view the workforce, turning people away from lucrative skilled labor opportunities because they are viewed as “dirty jobs”.
It is time for that stigma to change, and it is time for our society to realize how important skilled laborers are to keeping the US economy going, and all other industries moving. Diesel technicians are in high demand, for every 10 baby boomers there are only 2 new technicians to fill their spot. If making a living is the biggest concern for students choosing the college route, they should consider that the median annual wage of a diesel technician is $40,000, and there are diesel technicians who make an excess of $100,000 a year.
