Tri State Truck Center Unveils Sponsored Classroom at Universal Technical Institute
Tri State Truck Center partners with educators to prepare the region’s workforce for opportunities in the trucking and diesel industries, where job openings will soon outpace the number of trained technicians.
Shrewsbury, Massachusetts (February 2015) – Tri State Truck Center, Inc., a heavy truck dealership, is pioneering how companies in the trucking industry react to the shortage of skilled diesel technicians. The company is sponsoring a classroom in the Norwood, Massachusetts campus of Universal Technical Institute (NYSE:UTI), the leading provider of post-secondary education for students seeking careers as professional automotive, diesel, collision repair, motorcycle and marine technicians.
Tri State Truck Center will unveil the sponsored classroom during a grand opening at 10:30 a.m. on March 13, 2015, at Universal Technical Institute, 1 Upland Road in Norwood.
In the trucking and diesel industries, skilled technicians are retiring at a significantly faster rate than new technicians are being trained, to the point of nearly crisis proportions. Tri State Truck Center strongly believes that to get past this crisis, the company must invest in future technicians by supporting educators like UTI who give students the training and skills needed to take full advantage of the opportunities within the industry.
“We are starting at UTI. We want to get in front of students, and let them know how important the career path they have chosen really is. We plan on moving into high schools and vocational schools to encourage students to think of other avenues and opportunities when considering their future, and their career paths,” says Kevin Holmes, President and CEO of Tri State Truck Center. “Our management team sees this skills shortage every day. We have diesel technician positions to fill, and nobody to fill them. Our customers simply cannot afford to have their trucks down, and off the road for lack of technicians for equipment maintenance and repair.”
Chuck Barresi, Campus President of UTI-Norwood, says many local employers like Tri State Center are working closely with UTI to help them build their pipeline and fill open positions for qualified, entry-level technicians.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the best job opportunities for diesel service technicians are for those who have completed formal post-secondary education, and have strong technical skills. “The high demand for technicians has created greater employment opportunities for our graduates,” says Barresi.
“Students and families should know that the opportunities available in diesel and trucking are incredibly important to our nation, and provide exceptional career paths and growth opportunities. These are jobs to be proud of,” Holmes says.
